Chpt. 1 Introduction

Welcome to WannaJava's online tutorial for beginning Java programmers! Here you can get your feet wet with the basics of Java programming. If you work through this tutorial, you will build knowledge, skills and confidence that will help you in your pursuit of Java.

What It Is

This tutorial makes no assumptions about prior programming experience. In other words, it's for beginners. If you already know a programming language, you're welcome to use this tutorial. Just bare in mind that it will be going into gory detail about everything, so you may want to breeze over some sections. However, core Java concepts are introduced throughout, so keep an eye out for them.

Those of you who are new to programming and have chosen Java as your starting point, you have chosen well. Java is a wonderfully graceful, full-featured, versatile language that will allow you to write applets, servlets, JSP's, and even stand-alone applications.

What It Covers

This is a beginners' tutorial, which just scrapes the surface of Java. But it covers many core programming concepts that you need to know to pursue Java. When you finish this beginning tutorial, you will be ready to take on Java's more powerful and subtle features.

How It Works

The way this tutorial is pieced together is fairly self-evident. Each major section of the tutorial, called a 'chapter', is divided into sub-sections. Each of these sub-sections constitutes a Web page. All the pages are linked together in a linear fashion. The whole thing will make the best sense if you start right here at the beginning, do each page, and then hit the 'Next' link at the bottom of the page. That way you'll be led through the entire tutorial in the order in which it was intended. When you are done with your current session, simply bookmark the page you're on so you can return to it later and continue.

Legal Necessities

This Web site is available to you as a guide and a resource, but WannaJava makes no claims about the accuracy of information contained. We will do our best to research everything to the fullest. If you find something you think is in error, feel free to e-mail our Webmaster.

Also, every page of this Web site is copyrighted. You are welcome to print it out for your own use, but you're not allowed to put any part of it into anything else (a book, another Web site, etc.) without written permission. And no one is allowed to profit from it. You can, however, freely link to this site from your own Web site if you would like.

That's about it for the legal disclaimers, so let's go learn some Java.
